The US is hooked on unregulated peptides. But are they effective, or even safe?

Do you want to speed up your recovery after an injury or workout? Some influencers are fans of shots from the BPC-157 and TB-500. Do you want blemish-free, youthful skin and thick hair? Reddit posts rave about GHK-Cu and KPV. Want to build beautiful, massive biceps? Some fitness influencers swear that shots of ipamorelin will do wonders. It’s the world of peptides — an assortment of chemicals that promise to boost your body and health — and people are injecting themselves with them in a growing wellness trend.

Promoted by bodybuilders and influencers, proponents of the “Make America Healthy Again” movement, and Silicon Valley early adopters, peptides promise results that take people from healthy to better, from fit to more fit. Yet despite getting rave reviews on social media, most peptides have limited clinical evidence to support health benefits, whether it’s helping heal a rotator cuff injury, improving libido, or building muscle. Not much is known about the effectiveness of the drugs and even less is known about their safety.
