The Cenozoic is a geological era that is currently ongoing. It began 66 million years ago with a sudden mass extinction known as the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, when a giant asteroid struck Earth and wiped out the nonavian dinosaurs. It’s been a busy time of some tens of millions of years, including hits like Earth’s first cacti, whales, and most (if not all) of the Grand Canyon.
How to use it in a sentence: Cenozoic is called the Age of Mammals, but University of California Paleontology Museum At Berkeley you might want to know that this could have been called the Age of Teleost Fish, if mammals had not been so self-centered.
