Researchers from Pavlodar, Kazakhstan-Margulan University found a large medieval structure while surveying an area in northern Kazakhstan, known as the Zhantai tract, with lidar and ground-penetrating radar. Excavations at the site revealed fragments of the type of burnt bricks that were used to build palaces, mosques, mausoleums and other monuments during the so-called Golden Horde period. Established in the thirteenth century, the Golden Horde was composed of lands under the rule of Prince Jochi of the Mongol Empire. The region extended from Siberia and Central Asia to Eastern Europe and south to the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
