The man got the shell casings from his "son's great-grandfather." Who puts it like that? 😂 Just say your grandfather!
The FBI may have records from the time of spent shell casings from other Dillinger gang robberies gathered at the time for use as evidence that may be compared to these cartridges.
I'm surprised nothing was said about attempting to find out, because the FBI used to save stuff like that, especially from big cases. Hoover was all about building databases of more than just fingerprints and he also wanted the best forensics labs in the world.
I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't framed photos of the bottoms of cartridges fired by Dillinger in a display case of Dillinger-related items at FBI headquarters.
