ANTALYA, Turkey – Excavations on the southern coast of Anatolia have revealed a road leading to the eastern gate of the ancient port city of Side, according to a turkey today Report. Since archaeological investigations began at the site in 1947, a theatre, temples dedicated to Athena and Apollo, baths, a monumental fountain and a colonnaded street have been discovered. “Side is an important maritime city, but at the same time it is an agricultural city because of the alluvial soil brought by the Melas River,” said Ferista Alanyali of Anadolu University. The newly discovered road leads to one of the two main gates of the city. The surrounding roads were also explored, Alanyali said. “We gained important information about the city’s history and historical stages,” he said. Alanyali concluded that residents repeatedly removed sand from the port of Side before eventually moving to another location.
