I had both those Atari games. Got an Atari game console in 1978 and probably had 50 different game cartridges by 1982; I used to buy them used off my friends when they got tired of them. Had an Intellivision as well, and got a Colecovision in 1983 or so. I wonder what it would all be worth if I’d held onto all of it?
My parents threw it all out when I went to college in 1985. They threw out all my eight-track tapes, too, which I’d been collecting throughout the second half of the 1970s. I ended up making my parents pay to replace the eight-tracks with vinyl and CDs — guilt over not even bothering to ask if I still wanted any of it — but the video games were just gone. I did buy myself a NES game console by the late 1980s and played it pretty obsessively well into the 1990s, when games for the Mac finally started to get interesting. I still have my NES and all my game cartridges in a box somewhere; I had all the Simpsons games like Krusty’s Super Funhouse and the Star Wars games. I doubt they’re worth much, but maybe I should dig all that stuff out to see if it still works. I’d just have to buy an old CRT TV to hook it all up to, as I ditched my last non-HDTV a good decade ago when remodeling the bedroom. Or I could just drop it all at Goodwill…
