I don't know why people don't know the history of Magic: the Gathering.
Garfield was getting a degree in mathematics and statistics. He wanted to study how the cards moved around the group. That's where the idea of ante came from. Which cards got put up for ante? How did they move from player to player? He designed the game for his thesis.
Garfield took the game to every game company. Steve Jackson Games. TSR. Everyone passed. Except for Peter Adkison at WotC. The first print run was so limited, it sold out in days. I bought 4 decks. No one knew what it was.
WotC eventually paid people at the company in stock. Which caused a problem when Hasbro bought them.
My buddy went to the shop when he was in Vegas, he told me you had to be a millionaire just to shop there.
